California legislators have debated the merits of Internet gambling for three years now. Despite tons of money spent on lobbying, campaign contributions and on public relations, those debates haven't gone anywhere. Sadly, this year may be different.
One homicide. Five robberies. One mob attack and a stabbing downtown. This week has been bleak in the history of Merced crime.
California residents have long complained that they don't have much of a voice in the operation of their ever-expanding state government. That is changing a bit with the economic crisis that has forced government to retract and our political leaders to cut programs. Now it's about competing priorities, and voters are having more of a voice in those choices.
Unwieldy. Convoluted. Irrational. Inequitable. Inefficient.
The only silver lining we can see in the drought we're going through is that it dried up Bear Creek enough to show us an urgent chore that needs to be done.
Local and state officials in California have been more than patient with the nation's top housing regulator. Gov. Jerry Brown finally had enough, firing off a letter to President Barack Obama that urges him to name a director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency who "will truly represent your policies."
The North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians has been trying for years to build an off-reservation casino on Highway 99 north of Madera, and has moved a step closer to its goal. But it's the wrong location for a Las Vegas-style casino, and Gov. Jerry Brown should kill the plan.
Fulfillment center.
Gov. Jerry Brown's realignment already is having a positive impact on the statewide prison system.
The California State University board of trustees will convene Wednesday to take up its revised formula for paying CSU campus presidents.
If this were a full-on Hollywood fairy tale, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords would return to Congress full time, sweep to re-election in November, or even run for the Senate. But this is real life, and Giffords has decided it's best for her and her constituents that she resign this week. The Arizona congresswoman's final acts in office are altogether fitting.
A report this week from U.S. News & World Report confirmed what we already know: Merced's got a jobs problem. One out of five people in Merced simply can't find work.
The nation's highest court made an emphatic stand Monday on behalf of privacy and civil liberties in the digital age.
To save money and make government more efficient, Gov. Jerry Brown, like his predecessor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, proposes to eliminate dozens of state boards and commissions that have outlived their usefulness.
Eating our seed corn. Shooting ourselves in the foot. Cutting off our nose to spite our face.
